Revisions to the Spring Semester Calendar

October 16, 2020
Attachments
Dear Whitworth community,

With valuable input from students and faculty, calendar decisions for the spring have been made that include a one-week delay in the start of the Spring Term, the cancellation of Spring Break, and a modified Easter holiday. These adjustments to the academic calendar are a necessary component of our ongoing commitment to protect the health of students, employees and the Spokane community by limiting the spread of COVID-19.

The Jan Term schedule will continue as originally planned, with classes beginning on Jan. 4 and ending on Jan. 25.

Spring Term for full-time undergraduate students will begin on Feb. 11, one week later than originally planned.

Regrettably, Spring Break is canceled in order to limit travel and the risks associated with students and employees returning to campus after leaving the area. Also, although Whitworth will still observe Easter weekend with no classes on Good Friday, classes will reconvene on the Monday following Easter. We will also request that students not travel outside of Spokane County for Easter.

The end of the academic year will still conclude as originally scheduled with final exams May 18-21 and Commencement Weekend May 21-23.

The following schedule will apply to full-time undergraduate students:
  • Jan Term – Jan. 4-25
    • Martin Luther King Jr. holiday – Jan. 18
    • Final exams – Jan. 25
  • Inter-Term Break – Jan. 26-Feb. 10
  • Spring Term – Feb. 11-May 21
    • No Spring Break
    • Easter weekend – no classes on Good Friday, April 2; classes resume April 5
    • Final exams – May 18-21
  • Commencement Weekend – May 21-23
  • May Term – begins May 24
School of Continuing Studies and MBA:
  • Students in the School of Continuing Studies and MBA will follow the original accelerated Spring Term calendar: Jan. 4-May 21 (6 week classes end May 7)
Graduate programs:
  • Athletic training, theology and School of Education programs (GSE, MFT, MIT) will follow the revised Spring Term schedule as described above.
More details will be forthcoming about residence hall move-in schedules and other public health protocols.

We thank the Whitworth community for its patience and flexibility as we continue to navigate the complex environment caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. As always, Whitworthians are showing themselves to be faithful, resilient and responsible despite the challenges. Our commitment remains to complete the academic year in residence and in person.

Blessings,

Gregor Thuswaldner, Provost & Executive Vice President
Rhosetta Rhodes, Vice President of Student Life & Dean of Students
